Helping cyclists to turn right

cycle filter lane runs into a bollard

Turning right from a minor to a major road is one of the more difficult manoeuvres for cyclists. This short section of off-road cycle path has been provided in the middle of the road as a safe place for cyclists to wait to turn right onto Grantham Road in Bingham. It is protected by a kerb and bollards to ensure that it will not be encroached by motor vehicles.

Initially many cyclists did not realise the purpose of the facility. Mistaking it for a pedestrian refuge, they continued to ride on the road. To rectify this, Nottinghamshire Council have changed the road markings and installed a short cycle lane to channel cyclists towards the facility.
