A Cycle Lane Half as Wide as a Bike

Cycle Lane less than half the width of a cyclist

It is extremely dangerous for cyclists to attempt to overtake buses on the left hand side while they are picking up passengers from a bus stop. Mandatatory cycle lanes make it illegal for bus drivers to pull in at the kerb, and inexperienced cyclists may be tempted to continue riding through the gap.

Gateshead Council have come up with this novel solution to the problem. By making this cycle lane on Shields Road less than half the width of a bicycle, it is impossible for cyclists to use it.
