Maintaining the Continuity of Cycle Routes

10cm wide cycle lane
Chris D.

Careful design is needed to maintain the continuity of cycle routes at traffic calming features. In this example near Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire County Council engineers have carfuly chosen the width of the pinch point such that a cycle lane marginally wider than a racing bike tyre can just be continued through the gap. An off-road bypass across the verge is provided for mountain bikes with wheels that are too wide to fit in the cycle lane.
