The Sustrans Safety Bollard

According to Sustrans, riding into bollards is much safer than riding on the road
Helen Simmons

Head on collisions can be a serious problem on narrow shared use paths, particularly in situations such as this example on National Cycle Network Route 13 at Scarning in Dereham; cyclists turning left from the road and other people using the route are hidden from each other by a hedge.

This bollard is Sustrans' highly innovative method for ensuring that users keep to the correct side of the path. People walking or cycling from right to left on the photo will see the bollard and keep to the left hand side of the path in order to avoid it. To discourage left turning cyclists from riding on the wrong side of the path to avoid the bollard it has been carefully hidden behind the hedge.
