Letter to the Council objecting to a one-way order covering Wellfield Street

RE: ONE WAY ORDER - Dear Mr Norris, I am writing to raise an objection on behalf or the Warrington Cycle Campaign to the proposed one-way order covering Wellfield Street, Fox Street and Kimberley Street. Measures should be put in place to exempt pedal cyclists from the order. Cyclists are seriously disadvantaged by one-way streets. They introduce additional distance and delay, which are important considerations when you are powering your own vehicle. Arrangements that permit cyclists to use streets in both directions can redress the situation and give cyclists a positive advantage over other traffic. The safety record of cycle contra-flow arrangements is generally good as there is good intervisibility between cyclists and oncoming vehicles. The most appropriate solution in this case would be to create false one-way streets. A false one-way street permits two-way traffic for most of its length, but is plugged at one end to motor vehicles. A cycle gap enables cyclists to by-pass the No Entry sign (see figure). There is no need to restrict the direction of movement of cycles as cycles can pass other vehicles in situations where there would not be enough space for two motor vehicles to pass each other. This might require both vehicles to slow to a crawl or stop, but this would be entirely in keeping with the principles of a home zone. Yours sincerely Pete Owens - For the Warrington Cycle Campaign
